Peter Kempson, copper halfpenny, 1796 (D&H Middlesex 837) Obv: Three men hanging on a gibbet. Around the perimeter NOTED ADVOCATES FOR THE RIGHTS OF MEN 1796; Rev: An inscription on five lines A WAY TO PREVENT KNAVES GETTING A TRICK; Edge: Plain, in collar
There are dozens of provincial tokens with men hanging from a gibbet - most attributed by D&H to Thomas Spence. However, with the exception of a single farthing die with the inscription 'End of P(i)T, all originated elsewhere. Peter Kempson turned out this one - and it is die linked to many other tokens issued by him.
This specimen is sharply struck and uncirculated; a bit of ancient lacquer remaining.
