William Mynn, Copper Halfpenny, 1794 Obv The Kentish horse facing left. Around the perimeter KENT HALFPENNY TOKEN Ex: 1794 Rev A shield of arms of the city of Canterbury. Around the perimeter FOR GENERAL CONVENIENCE * Edge PAYABLE BY W. MYNS GOUDHURST + + + + (Conder p.50, 17; Pye p.25, 3; Atkins p. 52, 27; D&H Kent 29)
This token was one of many produced under contract by William Lutwyche. He used the same dies for both this token and the one produced for William Fuggle (D&H Kent 28, a, b) differing only in the edge inscriptions. To avoid any confusion, Fuggle took to counterstamping his tokens with an F; Mynn with an M. It had been suggested that those without a counterstamp are are twice as rare as those with one. I find the opposite to be true.
From a late state of the obverse die, otherwise nearly extra fine.
